Halima Cassell was born in Kashmir, Pakistan and came to live in England when she was one year old. She studied 3D Design at University of Central Lancashire specializing in ceramics in 1997, followed by an MA in Design which she completed in 2002
Combining strong geometric elements with recurrent patterns and architectural principles, Halima's work utilises definite lines and dramatic angles in an attempt to manifest the universal language of number and create an unsettling sense of movement. To achieve these effects she uses heavily grogged clay that allows her to work on a large scale and utilise relatively thick surfaces to carve to the desired depth. Halima concentrates on simple forms as the basis of her work in order to maximise the impact of the complex surface patterns in combination with heavily contrasting contours
She has undertaken several residencies including ones in Japan (2007), Pakistan (2009), Israel (2010) and Italy (2011). She undertakes commissions for public, private and corporate clients, and has had solo and group shows in UK, Sweden, Japan, Belgium, Korea, Holland, Germany, Swaziland, and Chicago
Halima Cassell received a bursary from 'the shape of things' to produce 'Earth : Atmosphere' at Bilston Craft Gallery, May-July 2010 which then toured to Touchestones, Rochdale July-October 2011
